We don't find out what an experience will do to people by thinking about it harder.
Of course we research it, debate it, survey it, and prototype it…
But the question is still there.
The Five Depths give us a shared way to name what we're asking of people when they step into an experience we've designed.
A short film, to set the tone. It's three minutes. Watch this the way you would sit by a fire.
Maybe some of this sounds familiar:
The proposal is on version 46. Nobody has actually been inside the thing yet.
You probably spend half your time fighting for the space just to do the deep work.
You silence your phone. One hour to just sit with it.
We're not sure the prototype is even growing in the right direction. What was it supposed to teach us again?
Everyone's guessing how the audience will respond. Is this really how we make giant, expensive plans?
When people get nervous, someone suggests reusing an old idea, because at least it would "work." But you want to make something you're proud of.
You asked for time to explore. You got a workshop.
Do I have to go out on my own to make the work I actually want to make?
Or maybe you already left, and the old ways are still interfering.
If two or three of these sound like you, this series is for you.
