PART TWO OF FIVE
LIGHT
Recognition
What did they see about themselves that they walked in with?
At Light the experience reflects something back. The participant notices a pattern, a tendency, a reaction that was already theirs before they arrived. The experience did not create it. The experience made it visible.
Two things are easy to get wrong here.
The first: insight and capacity are not the same thing.
A person can see their move with total clarity and make exactly the same move tomorrow. Recognition does not have to change anything, and an experience that promises change on the strength of recognition alone is claiming more than it can deliver.
The second: the experience usually gets weaker the moment it explains the person to themselves. Recognition that arrives as a score, a type, a diagnosis or a lesson stops being recognition and becomes instruction. Sometimes the whole of it is:
Oh. I do that.
That is complete. It does not need improving.
What play looks like here
Play looks like curiosity without immediate correction.
The person gets to notice something before anybody tells them what it means or what they are supposed to do about it. The moment the noticing becomes a verdict, play collapses back into performance.
Try this on your own work
Find the place in something you have made where you explain to the audience what a moment meant.
Take the explanation out. Leave the moment.
What is left, and can you live with what it asks of them?
Seeing the pattern is one thing. The next depth is where the pattern stops working.
