Level 1: Unconscious Repetition: Filmmaker doesn’t know what they’re revealing about their own psychology

  • Fast & Furious franchise – Glorifies toxic masculinity while claiming to be about “family”
  • Transformers – Pure spectacle that unconsciously promotes militarism and objectification

Level 2: Pattern Recognition: Filmmaker sees patterns but can’t escape them

  • Scarface – DePalma recognizes the American Dream corruption but gets seduced by it
  • Goodfellas – Scorsese sees the glamour problem but can’t resist it

Level 3: Conscious Struggle: Filmmaker wrestles openly with paradox

  • Joker (2019) – Phillips knows he’s exploring dangerous territory and actively grapples with it
  • Fight Club – Fincher wrestles with the masculine fantasy he’s both creating and critiquing

  • There Will Be Blood – Paul Thomas Anderson consciously depicts unconsciousness
  • Her – Spike Jonze makes every choice about technology/intimacy deliberately
